Have you ever stood right next to a rocket launch and felt the reverberations rumble in your gut as the jet roars into space? Neither have I, but the closest thing I’ve experienced to that feeling was seeing Destruction Unit live at 285 Kent on Saturday. The Arizona-bred five-piece is part of the Ascetic House crew, the collective that sends free music to inmates. They’re also part desert storm, wreaking havoc and hearing loss to everyone who stands within reach—an electrical surge of kaleidoscopic psych swirls and garage summer sweat.
Late philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau postulated that the “savage” period of human development was the most formative. D-Unit’s frontman, Ryan “Elvis Wong” Rousseau, is the living embodiment of that claim, crafting carnivorous punk into a seething form, undeniably human at its most primitive. I’ve seen many a punk band in my day, but even the punk-pranksters’ self-explanatory name couldn’t have fully prepared me for the incredible freakfest ahead.
Rousseau scanned the audience with crazy eyes while deep-throating the mic a la Karen O. Guitars jabbed directly into amps, resulting in a room-enveloping distortion and crying eardrums. Cables tangled, beer was thrown and near the end of the set, Rousseau threw a mic stand into the crowd. The metal grazed my head but this band grabbed ahold of my heart and squeezed.
And they said punk was dead.

Marshstepper wins the prize for pure spectacle in its heady mixture of music and ceremony. Bathed in deep red light, a trio of masked figures in various states of undress enacted an occult ritual involving a sword, a chalice, some sensual gyrations, and what appeared to be a snap-on codpiece. This was scored by a pair of musicians hiding in the back, producing hypnotic industro-rhythms alongside distorted howling and incantations. A live-action Kenneth Anger tableau with softcore touches of Crowleyan sex magic(k), Marshstepper’s intricate symbolism was probably best appreciated by serious occultists while still entertaining to noobs who were titillated by Eyes Wide Shut. Sacred Boners, anyone? (Yeah, I went there.)
